fashion recap: the Golden Globes

Award show season is one of my favorite times in fashion, when runway designs hit the red carpet in tangible form, glittering on actresses vying for their spot in the "Best Dressed" column. This year was the first time in a while that I did not have a television to watch the Golden Globes live. Instead, I rabidly followed Twitter (thank you, Refinery 29, Lucky Magazine and Paper Magazine) and PopSugar.

I was so excited to see some of the shows I had been pulling for win (Homeland! Downton Abbey!), and I was even more impressed by the quality of the red carpet looks this year. In my opinion, best dressed goes to:

Emma Stone in Lanvin

Alber Elbaz knows how to dress a woman's figure. I have been especially loving anything Emma wears these days, but these shades combined with her skin and hair tones is exquisite. I love that the dress was a little out of the ordinary with the jeweled avian belt.

Michelle Williams in Jason Wu

With his upcoming collaboration at Target and habit of dressing the First Lady, Jason Wu is doing pretty well lately. Add this gown on the Golden Globe winner Michelle to the recent list of successes. I loved the print, color and silhouette on her, and the headband pulled together the whole look.

Charlize Theron in Dior
Charlize could wear a paper bag and make it look great. I recently saw her on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon wearing just jeans and a tee, and she looked phenomenal. I love this soft pink on her. The silhouette is dramatic, but she pulls it off.

Natalie Portman in Lanvin
I know a lot of people dubbed this dress boring, but Natalie wasn't nominated this year, and it was one of her first major appearances since giving birth to her son Aleph. I think it was a classic choice, reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She looked radiant.

Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen
I put Reese on my "Worst Dressed" list for last year's Oscar choice, but she looks stunning in this saturated red gown. I love how the monochromatic look of the structured bodice was softed with simple make up and wavy hair.

Salma Hayek in Gucci
Does this woman age? I don't think so.

Honorable mentions:

Claire Danes in J. Mendel

Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci

Kristen Wiig in Bill Blass

  5. Great picks, Hope! I agree with Charlize, Emma, and Reese. Glad you didn't include Zooey on the list. Even with her tuxedo nails (cute), she was my worst dressed pick of the night! My favorite was Jessica Alba. :)
